About the event

Science-Fiction is a literary genre that has explored issues of Race, Diversity, Colonialism and what it means to be Human in a universe that’s becoming increasingly virtual; and yet it’s still subject to so much snobbery in literary and publishing worlds. Please join us as we explore the genre’s eternal appeal, the roots of the snobbery that so often dismisses it and where Science-Fiction is heading in the latter part of the twenty-first century.

Dr Una McCormack is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of over two dozen science fiction novels. She is passionate about women’s writing, science fiction, and helping people find their words and voices. Her 2020 release, Star Trek: Picard novel The Last Best Hope, became a USA Today bestseller.

She has published more than a dozen novels set in franchises such as Doctor Who, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Discovery. Her audio work with Big Finish has been set in licensed properties such as Doctor Who and Blake’s 7.

Her shorter-form science fiction has appeared in anthologies edited by Gardner Dozois and Ian Whates. Her story ‘Taking Flight’ (2017) was shortlisted for the BSFA award for short fiction, and her novel Star Trek: Discovery – The Way to the Stars for a Dragon Con Award. In 2017, she was a judge for the Arthur C Clarke Award. Una’s most recent original novella, The Undefeated, was published by Tor in 2019.

Guy Adams is a prolific author who has written audio dramas featuring multiple incarnations of Dr Who as well as Jack Harkness, Bernice Summerfield, River Song, UNIT, and the TORCHWOOD team, as well as Blakes Seven adventures, adaptations of Oscar Wilde (The Picture of Dorian Grey) and HG Wells (The Shape of Things to Come). He’s also written Torchwood novels and tie-in books for the BBC TV hit series Life on Mars and Sherlock, as well as numerous original works (including the Heavens Gate, The World and The Change series). He also writes for 2000AD and has appeared as a mugger on TV soap Emmerdale.

Tickets are £5 + booking fee to include a tour of the musuem's Sci-Fi Fashion exhibition, a panel discussion hosted by Derek Farrell plus Q&A from the audience. Tickets are limited due to the venue capacity so book quickly.
